Letter from my Production Assistant
Back in late summer and early fall, 2010, my friend, Rick Cohen, put out a request for an intern to help out with his new film project - Season of a Lifetime. I felt compelled to respond - how could I help? What did he need? He needed a production assistant - someone who could come to Friday night football games all over East Georgia (and beyond) and do whatever. I hesitated for only a minute because Someone told me to do it. But how could I do this? I am a single mom, working full time with a brutal commute, a son serving in a war, other children at home, with little time for anything else. But I knew that I was meant to help. I received total support from my children and off I went to Greenville, Georgia to help with capturing a remarkable story. This is one of those times when you give just a little and you receive a hundredfold in return.
Coach Jeremy Williams was diagnosed with ALS in 2005 right in the prime of his life but his spirit is not affected. He is blessed with a beautiful wife and two adorable children (one of which was born with spina bifida). But everyone knows that the end is coming. The entire community of Greenville rallies behind Coach and it was truly a wonderful thing to see, hear, and watch the interaction between Coach, his staff, his family, the athletes, and the community. Due to his progression of his disease, it was understood that this would be his last coaching season with the Greenville Patriots. This is a Class A team that plays this last season all out for their coach. This is a team that suits up with torn jerseys, borrowed cleats, and mismatched equipment. The focus is not on what they lack - what matters is Coach and what he means to this team. Just how far will this team take Coach on his last ride?
I am humbled to have played just a small part in this film and to work with some awesome guys in the process. It was my pleasure to travel hours each week, carry equipment, take hundreds of pictures, retrieve camera batteries, track film tapes, keep us on the right road to each game, and to capture the spirit and watch the journey. I am proud of my friend, Rick, a wisecracking, city-bred, Jewish boy, that poured everything he had into capturing not only Coach but Coach's testimony of Christian faith and the small town rural community. You never know how the message is going to come - how it arrives - who is the carrier. This is one of those times!
